It’s no small accomplishment when an indie label can celebrate their anniversary. Happy fifteen year anniversary wishes are in store for Josh Wink and his Ovum records. The label, which started in Philly and became a huge European favorite, is home to artist like Pete Moss, D’Julz, Steve Bug, and Josh Wink himself.
Josh and his crew will be celebrate their anniversary down at Winter Music Conference (@ Shelborne) on Wed the 24th.
Our first lady of house has become a label honcho herself. Colette just recently launched, Candy Talk Records. The house label will see future single releases from her arsenal of sweet soulful funky buddies including Joshua Heath, LawnChair Generals, Sexual Chocolate, Chuck Love, Giano, and Colette herself.
The first release is a track with Joshua Heath feat. Colette “Call On Me” will be released soon.

You might have noticed the name Groove Armada around a bit lately. It could be due to their “Paper Romance“ single that has been on heavy rotation globally or maybe the massive new album released today. Either way, we thought we needed to corner these lads and get the goods for you. Thankfully, Andy Cato recently took time out of his busy schedule touring the sunny climes of Australia with the Big Day Out Festival to chat with us about where Groove Armada has been, where they’re headed in full force, as well as coffee, cigarettes, and lazers. Let the games begin. URB: Thanks for chatting with URB while on tour down in Australia, Andy. You are over halfway through the tour, how have they been treating you down under? ANDYCATO: It’s always special for us over here. We’re playing to 30,000 people a day. The new songs, the show and Saint Saviour on the vocals is feeling pretty electric. URB: Do you guys have a city in Oz that really does it for you? The Big Day Out Tour does afford you the luxury of hitting all the best spots in Australia. AC: The Gold Coast crew are the ravers, Sydney does things on a large scale and works the after parties well, and Melbourne’s got a San Fran vibe.

For all those people up at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, make sure to check out my man J-Boogie DJ for the Gold Medal at Shine Nightclub featuring U-Tern, Freeky P., Three Piece Suit and more. If you’re watching from the so called Humboldt of Canada aka Nelson BC, get ready because Boogie is hitting The Hume Hotel for an explosion of Afro Beat, Latin, Electro, Funk, Hip Hop and more. J-Boogie in the mix for the win!! Also check out his Olympic Top Ten after the photo.
The 2nd single from Groove Armada is finally here! Following the success of ‘I Won’t Kneel’ (single #1) comes ‘Paper Romance’ also featuring vocalist SaintSaviour in a duet w/ Fenech Soler. If these two singles are any indication, the new Groove Armada album is going to be an epic smash. Playing heavily on KCRW, ‘Paper Romance’ is an alternative electronic rock smasher issuing in a new era in Groove Armada!

We’re tickled pink to announce a very special new addition to our blog family, long time friend and one of our favorite music scribes, Jen Boyles! Om fans will recognize her name for in depth interviews w/ Mark Farina and Derrick Carter, Kaskade, King Kooba, Rithma, Afro-Mystik and many more. She’s been covering electronic music for over a decade! We’re honored to have her writing for us, she’s already uncovered music from New Order produced indie rockers The Scanners and quite possibly the last magazine still standing worth reading Self Titled.
Boyles has been fighting in the trenches of electronic music since there were such things as JNCOs, and for that matter, vinyl. Getting her start at super-hip alt-weekly City Pages in Minneapolis as a nightclubs and dance music reviewer, she went on to work for a whopping eight years for the now all-digital URB Magazine, and has enjoyed stints with BPM, CNET, and Chicago’s New City. She enjoys thrift stores and finding deals on cool street wear far more than the average person should and is partial to UK comedies and a bit of cheese. Her favorite interview of all time was with Mike D of the Beastie Boys. You can email her if you want at Jenboyles(at)gmail.com or find her on Facebook.
