Radar

One of the world´s premier skratch dj´s, a true master of his craft, Radar is one of the most sought after turntable artists in the scene today. His laid back style, speed, and timing is no force to be reckoned with. Ranked as 9th Turntablist in the World by Spin Magazine (April 1999), Radar has earned an international respect in the skratch circuit, rave scene, and hip–hop community. Most of his peers would not argue that he is in fact a musical prodigy. Being classically trained in music at the age of 10, Radar started his career playing drums. This early training in the musical arts gives him an overwhelming advantage over the competition today. His sense of rhythm came natural as a percussionist. Another unique gift that Radar has been blessed with is that he is also pitched trained, meaning he is able to decipher notes without looking on the keys of a piano (but given the octave). Age the age of 14, Radar saved up money and got turntable. He was immediately attracted to skratching and closely related the turntable as a percussion instrument.

From here, his career as a skratch dj got underway and he quickly excelled with his new instrument, which led him to innovate many new skratch techniques within this field. He has been labeled as "one of the best skratch drummers in world" by Yoga Frog of the Skratchpiklz. His specialty is the "shuffle" skratch, which was created and inspired from his early drumming career. Aside from innovating actual skratch techniques Radar has also single handedly created an entire system of transcribing skratching into musical/rhythmic notes. Radar has actually created and patented the first scored documentation for skratching. The song "Antimatter" off Om Record´s Deep Concentration 3 is a song that is created entirely from one turntable. Each sound heard on that song is made entirely from skratching pieced together layer by layer. The innovating thing about this song is that it was actually created on paper first in the form of notes before it was even recorded. He then began to compose and transcribe each part or sound individually one by one. Looking at it on paper, Radar then recorded the song piece by piece on a multitrack recorder.

Another patented innovation is the "Radar Live" performance. This performance is a power packed showcase involving one turntable and a custom modified sampler. Radar has pioneered a unique system of looping his skratches live and creating entire turntable songs literally from skratch. He has performed this a few times in Phoenix but actually presented it to the skratch world at the Skratchpiklz/ Icast party on March 30th 2000. Radar is currently finishing a live looping album that uses only turntable. Stay tuned for more details?
